Some 94 Steel Magnolias and guests gathered at the festively decorated Madison Restaurant in downtown Long Beach on December 6, 2010 for their annual Holiday Dinner. Fun and fellowship prevailed throughout the evening, typical of the warm Steel Magnolia’s “La Familia” milieu that makes the Steel Magnolias organization so special. Highlights of the evening included a presentation of a check for $215,000 representing the Steel Magnolias donation to the Stramski Children’s Developmental Center, accepted by the Memorial Medical Center Foundation, MMCF CEO/President Jim Normandin.
Special guests included Mayor Bob Foster and his wife, Steel Magnolia member Nancy Foster and the Stramski Center Medical Director Gary Feldman, M.D. and his wife Cecile. The 2011 new members were presented and welcomed into “La Familia:” Marion Pincombe, Garry Sandlin, Sherry Loos, Karen Blair, Jorene Hankla, Dia Kaesman, Pam Luckey, Gary Wolf and Renee Pratto. 750 Guests Support Stramski Children
From colonial to contemporary, the homes of Style Long Beach 2010 were designed to impress the 750 guests who took part in the sixth annual tour held on May 16. The event held by Steel Magnolias raised more than $48,000 for the Stramski Children’s Developmental Center at Miller Children’s Hospital.
Julie Suares, who co-chaired the fundraiser with Jacquie Wetenkamp, said, “We had a record crowd. It’s wonderful that it has grown every year. The homeowners were so generous and gracious. It’s not only rewarding for our members and volunteers who worked so hard, but it’s rewarding to help the children at the center in such a suc- cessful way.”
Wetenkamp added, “The community support has been wonderful. This year we were very excited to have a luxurious yacht with 2,100 square feet of living space – it was a big hit. We also added a car show to our home accessories boutique and reception.”
The five homes and yacht on this year’s tour were: the Britton Whitcomb and Valentino-Dickson homes in Crown Pointe; the Wilson and Pratto homes in Naples; the 92-foot Tigress docked at the Long Beach Yacht Club; and the newly completed Alperin home in Park Estates.
The Style Long Beach post-tour reception was again held in the beautiful gardens of Anthony Gagliardi, Steel Magnolias chairman. There were refreshments, a boutique, en- tertainment by crooner Porter Singletary and a dozen classic cars on display, including a ’54 Bentley, ’63 Ferrari, ’67 Corvette, ’49 Cadillac, ’50 Chevy pickup, ’32 Ford two-door sedan, ’32 Nash, ’51 Ford pickup and ’48 Chevrolet.
Major sponsors of the 2010 home tour were AES, Mary Alice and Bob Braly, Caldwell Banker-Coastal Alliance, Committee of 300 of the Long Beach Grand Prix, Dawna and Councilman Gary De Long, Anthony Gagliardi, Mari Hooper, Long Beach Magazine, Min- uteman Press, Press-Telegram, Dottie and Ken Reiner, Ristorante daVinci, Suares In- vestment Group, and Wells Fargo.
